IAS

Indian Administrative Service [IAS] is one of the dream jobs of every youth in India. Along with IAS, there are 24 other services including IFS, IPS, IRS and so on. Due to its challenges and scope of transforming millions of lives in India, makes it as the prestigious services. UPSC conducts Civil Service Exams [CSE] popularly called IAS Exam annually for selecting candidates to top most services. Every year around 4-5 lakh of candidates appear for exam and only around 1000 are selected.

Structure of IAS- 2018

Schedule
  • IAS (Preliminary Exam) - 3rd June 2018
  • The Civil Services Examination is usually conducted in three phases:
    1. Preliminary (objective type) for selecting candidates for the main examination
    2. Civil Services (Mains) Examination which will comprise written paper and
    3. Personality Test (interview) for the selection of candidates.
  • There are 2 papers in Prelims exam – General Studies and Aptitude
  • Mains exam consists of 9 papers, including optional (2 papers), which is descriptive in nature. However, English language paper and regional language paper are qualifying in nature. Essay paper, four general Studies papers and 2 optional papers are considered for merit, along with interview marks.

General Studies Paper - I syllabus

  • Current events of national and international importance
  • History of India and Indian national movement
  • Indian and World Geography- Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the world
  • Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political system, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights issues, etc.
  • Economic and Social development – sustainable development, poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector initiatives etc.
  • General issues on environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate change-that donot require subject specialization
  • General science

Aptitude Paper - II syllabus

  • Comprehension
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Decision making and problem solving
  • General mental ability
  • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc.) (Class X level), Data Interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. – Class X level)
  • English Language Comprehension skills (Class X level)
